Strauss Magnum Black Ice Cream Bar

If I understood the press release correctly, a few months ago Magnum Strauss released an ice cream bar they called Triple. Then not too long ago, they added two more Magnum bars to the Summer 2013 line; one is called Black and the second Pink.

The Magnum Triple sounds very elaborate since it has a combination of white, milk and dark chocolate all in one ice cream bar. It’s a chocolate ice cream with a ripple of dark chocolate then covered in both white and milk chocolate.

Magnum Black Espresso is a Vanilla Ice Cream with a coffee swirl coated in dark chocolate. 

Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream

A few months ago Ben & Jerry’s-Israel asked their Facebook fans which of 5 specific flavors; that had been off the local market, should be reintroduced. Peanut Butter Cup won with 35% of the vote. Creme Brulee got 23%, Cherry Garcia 16%, Banana Split 15% and Oatmeal Cookie got 11% of the vote.

I was happy that Peanut Butter Cup “won”. I really love peanut butter cups and, as I think I mentioned in my review of Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream, I really enjoy the combo of sweet and slightly salty flavors so adding chocolate covered peanut butter to an ice cream is a real win-win in my book.

Strauss Café Zero

Back in May I read a few press-releases about Stratus's new ice coffee/ice cream/ices called Café Zero. It was being brought over from Italy after having major success there, and in a few other countries around the world. Until yesterday I didn't see this product in any kiosk, gas-station rest-stop shop or any other store that I checked, but I was on the lookout for it. When I came across it, in a little kiosk yesterday, I asked the owner if he knew why it’s been so hard to find it. He said that only select stores and kiosks were given the option to sell it because it’s still in the pilot stage here in Israel. They are to doing this "test" to see if it’s worth making it a permanent product here. He told me that it sells very well in his small shop and if that’s any indication he thinks by next summer it should be a permanent product and much more readily available here in Israel.

The Café Zero is available here in three flavors; Cappuccino, Espresso and Mocochino. I tasted the Cappuccino flavor. Although I am not a coffee drinker; hot, cold or iced, I do like coffee flavored ice cream so the idea of this cross between ice cream/ices/ice coffee intrigued me and I was very curious to taste it.

As Nestlé promised (and I mentioned in my review of Skinny Cow's Vanilla Cappuccino Ice Cream Sandwich) Skinny Cow added a Vanilla Ice Cream Cone to their local line of ice creams.  

It’s a full sized waffle-type ice cream cone that has a thin inner coating of milk chocolate which is then filled with Skinny Cow’s low fat Vanilla Ice Cream and topped with a bit of chocolate syrup.

Last July I told you about the Skinny Cow Ice Creams and how much I enjoyed their Cookies & Cream Sandwich. Since then I have bought those ice cream sandwiches quite a few times and still really like them. I wasn’t as crazy about the other Skinny Cow ice creams available here in Israel, not because they aren’t good, but they are less the flavors I naturally go for, so I just stick with the one I like best. Recently they added two sandwiches to the line that’s available here in Israel; Vanilla Cappuccino Swirl and Vanilla Blackberry Swirl. Although I am not a coffee drinker I do enjoy a slight coffee flavor in ice cream whereas I don’t really care for fruit flavored ice creams so I chose to try the Vanilla Cappuccino Ice Cream Sandwich.

Klik's Ice Cream Snack

As I was cleaning out the freezer, just now, I found this Klik Ice Cream Snack and I realized that I never wrote the blog post about it. So although this Klik ice cream snack is not Kosher for Pesach I thought I would just give you a quick post about in case you see it in the store freezer as your out and about this week before  Pesach with the kids and wonder if it’s worth buying. So here goes…

Klik Chocolate Snacks and Strauss Ice Cream have teamed up to make a Klik snack pack inspired ice cream snack. It’s one of Strauss Ice Creams new treats in their 2012 line up.

I thought today, being the first day of spring, would make today the perfect day to tell you about another ice cream I tasted recently. It’s one of Strauss low calorie ice cream pops that I have never tried before. I am not 100% sure if it’s a new flavor or not. It doesn’t say new on the box and I didn’t read a press release about it (yet) but I had never seen it in the stores before. So maybe it’s not new but it was new to me so I decided to blog about it regardless.

On the same day that the local meteorologists were predicting a major winter storm with strong winds, lots of rain and possible snow in many parts of Israel both Nestlé Ice Cream and Strauss Ice Cream thought it would be the perfect day to announce their new summer of 2012 lines of ice cream. Not all of them will be in the stores right away, some will only be available after Pesach, but I’m from the school of thought that any day of the year, no matter how cold and wintery it may be outside, is still the perfect day for ice cream, so I was more than excited to read about the products that I have to look forward to as we get closer to spring and summer.

Still, I chose to post about the first Nestlé ice cream product as we are having a nice mini spring time heat wave (what a difference a week can make).  I do plan on trying something from the Strauss line as well but today I will tell you about Nestlé's Granoleda Ice Cream Sandwich.

I personally much prefer the

Skinny Cow cookies & cream ice cream sandwich

over Strauss's sandwich

 but I think it’s a nice extra touch

on Strauss's part.

  I'm sure there are people that prefer the

 "mini surprise"

 not knowing if they are opening

 the chocolate or vanilla side of the sandwich

I guess u can't please all of the people all of the time

 

While they were at it Strauss also enlarged the

 Tamkor ice cream sandwich

 by 25%

that should please many

Ben & Jerry's Milk & Cookies Ice Cream

One of the main reasons I started this blog was because all the Israeli new-product reviews I found online or in the newspapers were in Hebrew. When I first made Aliyah, before Hebrew became second nature, I would have appreciated having a review in English. Then when I come across an item that is new here in Israel but is also popular in say the USA, like Ben & Jerry's Milk & Cookies Ice Cream, I'm not sure if I should just let you guys know it's available here and direct you to an American bloggers review or if I should go ahead and give you a full blown review of my own.

When it came to Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby I did write my own review but this time with their Milk & Cookies ice cream I found a few good reviews on line so I will tell you that On Second Scoop has a very detailed review of this ice cream that debuted in the USA over a year ago.

 

After tasting Ben & Jerry's Milk & Cookies ice cream for myself I thought that Dubba's review was very accurate and well written. I too really enjoyed the ice cream and loved the abundance of 2 chocolate chip cookie doughs, but I do have something to add.

 

I mentioned in my review of Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwiches that "cookies & cream" ice creams is one of my all time favorite flavors  but I had an issue with the chocolate cookies swirl in this Ben & Jerry's Milk & Cookies Ice Cream. The swirl seemed to melt faster than the ice cream and wasn’t totally "mixed" into the ice cream so it ended up being somewhat grainy and crummy. Had the cookie swirl been more integrated into the ice cream the crumbs would not have bothered me, I most likely would have really enjoyed them, but since it was sort of melted on the side it ended up seeming somewhat grainy and chalky to me.

 

That having been said, all the other aspects of this Ben & Jerry's Milk & Cookies ice cream were so enjoyable that I can absolutely see myself buying it again, so long as it remains on the shelf here, because sadly, as far as I know, it’s a limited edition flavor. I truly hope that Ben & Jerry's Israel changes their mind on that and makes this Milk & Cookies Ice Cream a permanent flavor.

 

Bottom Line: Even thought July is coming to an end and with it  "national ice cream month" I think if you enjoy a crummy cookies swirl and an abundance of chocolate chip cookie doughs in your ice cream Ben & Jerry's Milk & Cookies ice cream can and should be enjoyed any month of the year.

Nestlé's Skinny Cow Ice Cream

I was really happy to read that  Nestlé Ice Cream started importing the "famous" Skinny Cow Ice Creams to Isreal. I had heard for years from friends back in the US how much they love the taste of this ice cream and the fact that Skinny Cow Ice Creams can be enjoyed without guilt; considering it has a fraction of the calories that most ice creams have. Now that they are also available here I was excited to try it too.

 There are 2 ice cream pops and 3 ice cream sandwiches available here in Israel from the Skinny Cow line; Vanilla Lemon Sorbet Ice Cream Bar (87 calories), Vanilla Strawberry Sorbet Ice Cream Bar (88 calories), Chocolate Ice Cream    Sandwich (129 calories), Mascarpone Ice Cream Sandwich (135 calories)  Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Sandwich (141 calories).

The Cookies & Cream Sandwich was the natural choice for me, seeing as ice cream sandwiches have always been a favorite of mine and cookies & cream ice cream is one of my "go to" flavors, so that’s the one I chose to try.

The photo on the package is ever so slightly deceiving. I sort of expected a wider sandwich filled with more ice cream than it actually had but, in fact that is where my disappointment ended, and on second thought, for a 66 gram sandwich this Skinny Cow Ice Cream was a nice and indulgent size treat.

The round and "decorative" chocolate cookie/biscuit part of the sandwich was chocolaty, soft and chewable. To me it tasted exactly like many full calorie ice cream sandwich cookies tastes and I really enjoyed it.

The ice cream inside was soft and creamy. Had I not known it was reduced fat I never would have guessed! The vanilla ice cream was jam packed with the tiny cookie crumbs, just as cookies & cream ice cream should be.

Bottom Line: In my opinion, everything about this Skinny Cow Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Sandwich was indulgent and enjoyable. What started as an experiment back in 1994 by two entrepreneurs in New Jersey will now become a permanent fixture in my freezer here in Israel. Thank you guys! I will absolutely be trying the other flavors but I have a feeling the Cookies & Cream Sandwich will remain my favorite.

Goats Milk Gelato "The Smooth Side"

Chef Boaz Kwintner (שף בועז קווינטנר ) started a new company called La Luna and if I'm not mistaken this line of goat's milk ice creams is their first product to hit the shelves.

Instead of writing the company name on the containers Chef Boaz decided to give each flavor its own interesting name so we have; The Smooth Side, The Lush Side, The Light Side, and The Bright Side.

The four flavors are; coffee, chocolate, melon and vanilla coconut with chocolate chips.

Although I mentioned the other day in my review of Illy's Cold Coffee that I'm not a coffee drinker, I chose to taste the coffee flavor because it's only 1.9% fat; the lowest of the 4 ice creams. Compared to regular ice creams all of these goat's milk ice creams are low in fat; the melon ice cream has 2.8% fat, the chocolate has 2.9% fat and the vanilla coconut with chocolate chips has the most at 4.3% fat.

After enjoying Tzuriel's Goats-Milk Yogurt I knew that goat's milk products can be wonderfully tasty and are known to be much easier to digest, so I had high hopes for this coffee ice cream.

The first time I bought the ice cream happened to be a very hot Friday here in Israel, by the time I got home the ice cream had melted into a perfect milkshake texture. I was afraid if I put in the freezer at that point I would ruin the taste, so I decided to enjoy it as a milk shake. It was a delicious smooth and creamy coffee flavored drink. I actually really liked it but I thought if I wanted to write a review about this product I would have to taste it as an ice cream. I really did not mind buying another container and eating it as the chef intended.

As an ice cream "The Smooth Side" was just that; it was a smooth luxurious coffee ice cream.

I know some people and many children are hesitant to taste goat's milk products simply because they are so used to cow milk products, but to me this ice cream was absolutely wonderful and if I didn’t know it was made of goat's milk I don’t think I would have noticed a difference. I simply enjoyed the rich silky coffee ice cream.

The Smooth Side Coffee Goat's Milk Gelato is all natural, made with 100% fresh goat's milk which makes it lactose friendly. It is also high in dietary fibers and is packaged in a 100% recyclable container.

Bottom Line: The Smooth Side Coffee Ice Cream has become one of my favorite summer treats. I prefer it as an ice cream but even if by the time I get it home and it's melted into a milkshake I still thoroughly enjoy it. Knowing it only has 1.9% fat makes me feel even better about eating it.

Nestlé's "Nok-Out" Mascarpone & Lemon Ice-Cream Bar

After not loving the Ice-Cream part of Nestlé Crunch Roll Ice-Cream Pops I was hesitant to try another Nestlé ice-cream product, but the Mascarpone Lemon flavor really intrigued me.

Since my main issue with the ice-cream in the "Crunch Roll Bar" was the lack of real milk or cream, reading that this Nok-Out Mascarpone and Lemon Ice-Cream Bar has real butter in it made me think that this ice cream is likely to be a very different consistency, so I wanted to give it a shot and I'm really glad I did. The ice-cream in the Nok-Out Mascarpone and Lemon Bar was a soft, creamy delicious treat.

This mascarpone and lemon flavored Nok-Out bar has crumbled vanilla cookies mixed into the ice-cream and is coated with a nice layer of white chocolate.

I thought that all of the flavors work perfectly well together, none of them overpower or clash with each other. For me there was the perfect touch of lemon to play off the more dominant mascarpone flavor. I enjoyed the texture and taste that the vanilla cookies added to the mix and the white chocolate coating was an ideal topping for this wonderful indulgence.

This creamy "Nok-Out" Mascarpone and Lemon Ice-Cream Bar might be the perfect Shavuot treat.

I'm thrilled I didn’t let my previous disappointment with a Nestlé ice-cream product stop me from trying this delightful luxury.

Bottom Line: Nestlé's "Nok-Out" Mascarpone and Lemon Ice-Cream Bar is a sweet and rich ice-cream that I'd say is geared more toward adults. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed this somewhat unique flavored ice-cream bar.

Nestlé Crunch Roll Ice-Cream Pops

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the same Nestlé Crunch that makes both the Nestlé Crunch Dou Cereal and the Nestlé Crunch Rolls Kosher for Passover Cereal, which I reviewed, also has a line of ice-creams. They now have 2 new ice-creams bar in their Crunch Rolls line of products.

The new bars are vanilla ice-cream coated with either White Crunch Chocolate or Crunch Milk-Chocolate. The chocolate coating has rice-crispy cereal mixed in, just like you would find in a classic Nestlé Crunch Chocolate Bar. Under the layer of vanilla ice-cream these bars are filled with a big chunk of nougat.

To me these Nestlé Crunch Roll Ice-Cream bars seemed to be much more chocolate than ice-cream. I actually think that's a good thing, seeing as I didn’t really enjoy the ice-cream part all that much. After carefully reading the label I learned that the ice-cream is made with milk powder and not with real milk or real cream. That could be why it didn’t seem as rich, smooth and creamy as I was hoping it would be.

The chocolate and nougat filling, on the other hand, were very enjoyable. Granted it's not the best quality chocolate I've tasted but it didn’t seem too grainy to me.

The wooden stick in the center of the ice cream bar was a dowel like rounded stick and added to the overall "roll" feel and shape of this ice cream pop.

These Nestlé Crunch Roll Ice-Cream pops seemed to be on the smaller side, they are by no means a mini bar, but being 72 grams, they are smaller than other ice-cream bars in the store freezer.

Nestlé Crunch Roll Ice-Cream pops have no artificial food coloring in them.

Bottom Line: I enjoyed the chocolate and nougat parts of the Nestlé Crunch Roll Ice-Cream bars and I thought it was a fun shape and nice size, but I was not impressed with the quality of the ice cream itself.

Strauss's "Magnum Desire" Ice-Cream Bars

Strauss has a habit of introducing their new summer-line of ice-creams mid-March, toward the end of winter. Considering the mild winters we have here, there are very few days that ice-cream is not appropriate. Maybe their timing is not so odd and they just want to get a jump start on their competition.

Today is not only Shushan Prium but it's also the first day of spring so lets have some ice-cream.

Among Strauss's new ice-creams there are 2 new Magnum Ice-Cream bars that they are calling the "Magnum Desire" line.

Praline and Orange; orange rippled chocolate ice-cream, with nougat flavored pralines & orange cubes, then coated in bittersweet chocolate & chopped hazelnuts.

I've mentioned before that I prefer bittersweet chocolate. Since I could not find the bittersweet chocolate one in my supermarket; I tried the second one, which is

Praline and Nuts; almonds and nuts flavored rippled vanilla ice-cream with cinnamon flavored pralines, then coated in milk-chocolate & chopped hazelnut.

To me, "on paper" they both sounded very elaborate and intriguing. That is until I took my first bite. The coating was fairly hard and if I let it sit for a few minutes the ice-cream inside would have been so soft and melted off the stick too fast. Maybe they need to make the coating a little thinner.

Another thing I did not like about the coating was how grainy the chocolate itself was. To me, it tasted like a very low quality chocolate. In many ways that sort of fit with the low quality of the ice-cream itself, which was more ICE than CREAM!

I saw so little almond and nut ripple that I could hardly taste it. There were only 2 pralines in the whole bar. Yes, it was a mini-bar, but for a 4 inch x 1 inch bar that seems like a ridiculously low amount to me. The 2 I did have were way to hard in comparison to the ice-cream. I did not taste any cinnamon in them. I didn’t really enjoy them; maybe it's not so bad that there were only 2 pralines to be found. 

Bottom line: In my opinion, there was nothing desirable about this Magnum ice-cream bar. If I want to indulge in ice-cream I'll stick to Chubby Hubby and leave Straus's "Magnum Desire Bars" in the store freezer.
