Maimon's Pancakes Mix

מימונ'ס תערובת להכנת פנקייק
As I mentioned in my review of Maimon's Readymade Belgian Waffles the other day I also had another Maimon's product to review this time it’s a Pancake mix.

The box "brags" JUST ADD WATER. I have to admit I'm always ultra skeptical of mixes that only need water added. I think the mixes that ask you to add things like oil and eggs as well as water tend to come out better but as I mentioned the other day, a) I happen to really like pancakes and b) ever since Maimon's won that Product of the Year Award I really wanted to try some of their items so I decided to go for it regardless of my hesitation. Later when I read the "fine print" I learned that I can substitute half of the 1 and 3/4 cups of water for milk if I would like to, so that’s exactly what I did, (the mix itself is non dairy).

I decided to mix the batter in a blender and not a mixer, this way it would make pouring the batter into the frying pan a much neater process. I thought the batter mixed really easily and well. The 1 and 3/4 cups liquid was the perfect amount to give me the consistency I was expecting. So I seemed to be off to a good start :)

As my frying pan got hotter and hotter the pancakes looked better and better. I was actually enjoying the wonderful aroma of fresh pancakes that was filling up my kitchen.

Things seemed to go downhill once I actually tasted the pancakes. They were far from the perfect pancake I was hoping for; instead they were gummy and rubbery. Even the ones that I know were completely cooked through seemed to taste raw. It actually reminded me of a potato levivah that I tried one Chanukah. Those levivot were also made from a "just add water" readymade mix. I wonder if the powdered eggs in the mix might be part of the problem,  I don’t know for sure all I do know is that both these pancakes and those potato pancakes had that same rubbery texture and were very unappealing to me. I know I'm no Julia Child but still I don’t think this fail was my fault.

Bottom Line: I enjoyed making the pancakes but I didn't enjoy eating them. To me they tasted like a raw gummy mess. I actually had to throw most of them in the garbage because they were simply inedible and got worse as they cooled off. As my friend always reminds me, whenever we talk about foods we love, there's nothing like fresh pancakes made from scratch! I agree with her even more after trying this mix :) I for one will not be buying Maimon's Pancakes Mix ever again.

  3. HAHA - yeah I wish they would have tasted as good as they looked :(
I guess I learned my lesson not to make pancakes from a "just add water" mix.
